THE AMERICAN BEHAVIORAL STORY
American Behavioral Benefits Managers, Inc. (American Behavioral) is a full-service managed behavioral health care organization providing Employee Assistance Program services, managed mental health care, pre-employment and promotional psychological testing, drug screening, manager and supervisor training, and critical-incident stress management. Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, American Behavioral serves companies with employees and families in all 50 states and Canada.
In 1990 company founder H.E. Logue, M.D., recognized the trend toward providing cost effective quality behavioral healthcare as the nation struggled to address soaring health industry cost and quality of care. Dr. Logue tapped the expertise of hospital administrator Allen S. Blackwell, to help him formulate the business model and share in his vision of creating a world-class behavioral healthcare company. They soon realized the services they provided were scalable and began offering them throughout Alabama and eventually nation-wide.
Since the first contracts in 1990, American Behavioral has enjoyed many successful milestones, including full accreditation in Health Utilization Management Services in 2002 by the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC). Once accreditation was achieved, American Behavioral recruited a prominent group of individuals as members of its board of directors who would help guide the company. In 2004, American Behavioral was invited to join with other behavioral health organizations in the National Behavioral Consortium (NBC). Since joining, Blackwell, as President and CEO, has served on the Board of Directors and as President of NBC.
From its humble beginnings in 1990 until now, American Behavioral has grown to manage approximately 1,000,000 covered lives while catering to the unique needs of large corporations in diverse fields such as healthcare, manufacturing, banking, retail, and high tech industries as well as governmental and municipal entities.
Twenty years after its inception, American Behavioral continues to strive to provide quality, cost effective, behavioral health care services to employers and their employees.
